Fr Paul reads from the Gospel of John (6: 22-29) in which Jesus tells the people ‘do not work for food that cannot not last but work for food that endures to eternal life’.
In this Gospel, Fr Paul says, Jesus speaks of eternal life, of hunger, of signs and all these things are messianic signs; signs that God has sent him into the world and that we must believe. Jesus explains in this Gospel that the bread he offers is belief. The work of God, which they must reach, is belief in the one who sent him.
Fr Paul says, we see in this Gospel a hungry crowd searching for Jesus and they find him. They want more bread. They want to be physically satisfied but they cannot see, a beyond their empty stomachs. They fail to see the deeper meaning of what Jesus is teaching and offering.
For our reflection, Fr Paul invites us to reflect on those words about doing the work of God; the work of God is this ‘you must believe in the one He sent’.
