Today we celebrate the feast of St Matthias. After Fr Paul reads from John’s Gospel (15: 9-17), he shares a bit more about Matthias.
Fr Paul says, Matthias was not one of the original twelve disciples. After the treachery and death of Judas Iscariot, someone had to take his place. We know from scriptures that two candidates were selected, lots were drawn to see who the successful candidate would be, and that was Matthias. The drawing of lots was a Jewish custom, which was seen as a way of putting the final choice into the hands of God.
For our reflection today, it would do us well to remember when we attain some position in our lives, we have gotten it because of the other people we have met and the things we have done; however, we must always remember that, more fundamentally, we have achieved this position because of the gifts and talents God has given us.
