Fr Paul reads from Luke’s Gospel (5: 33-39) in which Jesus is questioned about fasting by the Pharisees. After reading the Gospel, Fr Paul shares a little about the life of Pope St Gregory the Great, whose memorial we celebrate today.
St Gregory was born in Rome in the 540AD and he had a career in public service which was usual for the son of an aristocratic family. He held the post of Prefect of Rome for some years. He founded a monastery in Rome and in a few other places then he became a monk himself and then was ordained a deacon. He was elected Pope in 590, the first monk to be elected to the office of Pope.
Pope St Gregory the Great wrote extensively on pastoral care, spirituality and morals and he designated himself servant of the servants of God. He died in 604.
As today we celebrate his life, Fr Paul invites us, in the tradition of our church to ask, St Gregory the Great, pray for us!Fr Paul reads from Luke’s Gospel (5: 33-39) in which Jesus is questioned about fasting by the Pharisees.
