Fr Paul reads from the Gospel of Mark (1: 14-20) in which Jesus proclaims the good news of God and calls Simon, Andrew, James and John to follow him. Fr Paul says as we begin the season of Ordinary Time, this Gospel emphasises the importance of Jesus’s new community. In John’s Gospel we hear that two disciples are called and today’s we hear Mark’s account of calling of the disciples and we hear of the four being called. The calling of the disciples is one of the very first things Jesus does. He realises and knows that he can’t do everything on his own and that is the point of the Church. We all have our part to play in Jesus’s plan. We might be old or busy or young or whatever but each of us can make a unique contribution. Fr Paul says the point of the Gospel today is threefold. Firstly, there is the call; secondly, there is the response; and, thirdly, there is the working together for the benefit of all. Fr Paul again emphasises we have our part to play in Jesus’s plan and asks us to reflect and pray on these questions, ‘Do I play my part in Jesus’s plan? Do I contribute or do I just sit back and let others do the work?’
