Fr Paul reads from the Gospel of Matthew (18: 21-35) in which Jesus, through the parable of the unmerciful servant, teaches about forgiveness.
Today’s Gospel is a favourite parable of Matthew as it continues the theme that forgiveness is central for any Christian community. Fr Paul notes, the reality is that we cannot live together without knowingly, or unknowingly, upsetting one another so forgiveness is a vital step. Forgiveness cements a relationship making it stronger than it was before. Fr Paul says it reminds us of the words in The Lord’s Prayer, ‘forgive us our trespasses as we forgive others’. This parable of Matthew’s, like so many others of his, uses contrast – you have the goodie and the baddie – and you have the contrast between the two amounts of money. The first slave owes millions of dollars; the second slave owes a couple of months wages. The theme today is forgiveness and, Fr Paul says, as we continue our Lenten Journey, in what areas of my life do I need forgiveness? Who do I need to forgive? And whose forgiveness do I need?
