Fr Paul reads from the Gospel of Matthew (6: 25-34) in which Jesus tells his disciples not to worry about their lives, that the heavenly Father who takes care of the birds of the air, will look after their needs, too, if they seek first the Kingdom of God! After reading the Gospel, Fr Paul shares a little about the life, St Mary of the Cross MacKillop (our very own Saint) whose memorial we celebrate today.
Fr Paul says Mary MacKillop was born in Melbourne in 1842 and she worked as a governess and a teacher to support her family. In 1866 she founded St Joseph’s School, the very first free Catholic school in Australia. Then, with the help of Fr Julian Tenison Woods she founded an order of nuns, the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart. They opened many schools and other charitable institutions and this great work continues to this very day. Mary died in 1909 and was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010 becoming Australia’s first Saint. On this special day, Fr Paul invites us to pray, ‘St Mary of the Cross MacKillop…Pray for us!’
