Fr Paul Gooley reads from the Gospel of Luke (14: 12-14) in which Jesus says when you give a lunch or dinner, do not invite those who can repay you, instead invite those who cannot repay you – the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind – and you will be blessed.
Fr Paul says today we hear the second parable about dinner parties, remember that we heard the first one on Saturday. The theme in this parable is one that Luke stresses often, that is, the danger of wealth and the need to use it for the disadvantaged. Again and again the lesson is underlined by the parables – the Good Samaritan (Luke 10: 25-37), the Rich Fool (Luke 12: 13) and even the Crafty Farm-Manager (Luke 16): ‘Use money, tainted as it is, to win you friends’. The underlying thought here is that we as human beings should always imitate the Creator, who always cares for those in need. So mindful of this message, Fr Paul invites us to think today about ‘How can I help others around me?
