Fr Paul reads from the Gospel of Mark (8: 14-21) in which Jesus warns the disciples to be on guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and of Herod. Afterwards Fr Paul shares a little about Saints Cyril and Methodious whose memorial we celebrate today.
Fr Paul says Methodious was born in Thessalonica and with his brother Cyril he went to Moravia to preach the faith. They translated liturgical texts into the Slavonic language and invented the Glagolithic and possibly also the Cyrillic alphabets. After Cyril’s death Methodius went to Pannonia, where he persevered in the work of evangelization. In the complicated international politics of the time he suffered many attacks by his enemies, but he always had the support of the Popes. Methodius died on 6 April 885. Cyril was also born in Thessalonica and was educated in Constantinople. With his brother, Methodius, he went to Moravia to preach the faith. As Fr Paul previously mentioned they translated liturgical texts into the Slavonic language and invented the Glagolithic and possibly also the Cyrillic alphabets. Both brothers were called back to Rome, and it was there that Cyril died on 14 February 869. As we remember their lives today, Fr Paul invites us to pray ‘Saints Cyril and Methodious…pray for us!’.
