Fr Paul reads from the Gospel of John (14: 7-14) in which Jesus says to his disciples “If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
Fr Paul says this is the second time this week that we have heard in this Gospel. The same Gospel was used for the feast of Saints Philip and James earlier this week. In this Gospel Jesus now explains how he is the Way to the Father. Think of an envoy. An envoy is a person. The envoy is sent by the sender. The envoy fully represents the sender. The envoy has the power of the sender. The envoy deserves and is given the same respect and honour as the sender. The envoy stands in the place of the sender. The envoy has the power to enter into agreements. The envoy has the power to effect results. The envoy always reports back to the sender. With this in mind, Fr Paul shares today’s Gospel Challenge – replay the Gospel reading and listen carefully with this image of an envoy in mind. The way to God, the sender, is through Jesus the envoy.
