Fr Paul Gooley reads from the Gospel of Mark (10: 1-12) in which the Pharisees test Jesus’ knowledge of the Law by asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?”

Fr Paul says, in this Gospel, we encounter Jesus teaching about the sanctity and indissolubility of marriage. When questioned by the Pharisees about the lawfulness of divorce, Jesus directs their attention back to God’s original design for marriage, stating, “What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder”. This declaration emphasizes that marriage is not merely a human contract but a divine covenant, firmly established in God’s creative will.

Jesus acknowledges the allowance for divorce given by Moses, attributing it to the “hardness of heart” of the people. However, He calls us to a higher standard, reminding us that from the beginning, God’s intention was for a lifelong union between a man and a woman. This teaching challenges contemporary views on marriage and invites couples to embrace the grace of the sacrament, which empowers them to live out their commitment in love and fidelity.

As we reflect on this passage, it is essential to recognise that marriage is a living sign of Christ’s love for the Church. Couples are called to embody this love, fostering unity and mutual support. In a world where relationships can often be fragile, the message of this Gospel encourages us to uphold the dignity of marriage, embedded in God’s eternal plan, and to seek His grace to strengthen our bonds.

Fr Paul invites us today to pray for all married couples, that they may find joy and strength in their vocation, reflecting the unwavering love of Christ in their lives.
