Fr Paul reads from the Gospel of Luke (8: 16-18) in which Jesus says ‘No one lights a lamp to cover it with a bowl they put it on a lampstand so that those who enter may see the light, for nothing is hidden that will not be made clear’.

Fr Paul says, after explaining the parable of the sower, Luke (like Mark), gives three little sayings of Jesus about the process of revelation.  The first saying, often called ‘The parable of the lamp’, must be a reflection for the disciples: so just as Jesus explained the parable of the sower to them, they, the disciples, must explain the teaching of Jesus to anyone who wishes to enter the Kingdom.

The second saying reflects on the extent of what will be revealed. Eventually, all the truth will be revealed (not just some, but all).    The third saying, which Luke introduces by ‘take care how you listen’ in the Gospel, is an encouragement to make use of the treasure of revelation, but it also comes with a warning…. failure to hear and understand what is revealed can easily be taken away from those who even think they have.

For our reflection today, Fr Paul invites us to reflect on these three sayings Luke gives us and to ask ourselves, ‘How do I reflect the Word? Do I show others what has been revealed to us?
