Fr Paul reads from the Gospel of John (6: 60-69) in which Jesus asks the disciples if they want to leave and Simon Peter answers, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”
Fr Paul says right throughout John’s Gospel a huge division takes place. There are those who can accept Jesus as the Messiah and then there are those who cannot accept this. Now as we conclude the revelation that Jesus is the wisdom of the Father; that Jesus is the Bread of Life; we come to the sad moment of the division of the disciples. Some find the message just too hard. They can’t accept it and, as we hear in today’s Gospel, they walk away. When this happens Peter then makes his moving and loving act of faith… You have the words of eternal life – We believe. Fr Paul says, for our reflection today, we might understand that we, too, face the same choice. How deep is our faith? How strong is our commitment? Fr Paul notes that this weekend we celebrate Mother’s Day and so, on behalf of everyone in the Parish, he asks God’s blessings on each and every Mum and extends best wishes for a happy, holy and beautiful Mother’s Day.
