Fr Paul Gooley reads from Luke’s Gospel (19: 41-44) in which Jesus arrives in Jerusalem and, as he arrives, he shed tears and tells of a dark future for the city and its people. Fr Paul says Jesus sheds tears because he loves his homeland; he loves his people; he loves the capital city of his land; and he loves the temple. He sheds tears because he knows that everything will be destroyed. In fact, in the year 70 Jerusalem was surrounded and invaded by the Roman Army and everything was destroyed. At the end of the Gospel Jesus warned the people to recognise the opportunities when God offered them. For our reflection today, Fr Paul says, this is a good warning for us to do the same in our own lives.
