Fr Paul reads from the Gospel of John (10: 22-30) in which Jesus says to the Jews who were gathered around him in the temple courts, ‘The works I do in my Father’s name are my witness, but you do not believe because you are no my sheep of mine. The sheep that belong to me listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.’ After reading the Gospel Fr Paul shares a little about St Athanasius, whose memorial we celebrate today.
Fr Paul says Athanasius was born in Alexandria. He assisted Bishop Alexander at the Council of Nicaea and later succeeded him as bishop. He fought hard against Arianism all his life, undergoing many sufferings and spending a total of 17 years in exile. He wrote outstanding works to explain and defend orthodoxy. Fr Paul invites to pray ‘St Athanasius…Pray for us!’
