Today as we celebrate the feast of St Matthew, Fr Paul reads from the Gospel of Mathew (9: 9-13) in which Jesus calls Matthew to follow him. Fr Paul says Matthew, whose life we celebrate today, was born in Capernaum, and was working as a tax-collector when Jesus called him. He is thought, by some scholars, to have written an earlier version of his Gospel in Aramaic, a precursor to the Greek version we now have. He is also said to have preached in the East. Today, Fr Paul invites us to ask ‘St Matthew…pray for us!’
