As we begin Advent, Fr Paul Gooley reads from the Gospel of Luke (10: 21-24) in which Jesus, filled of joy by the Holy Spirit says ‘I bless you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for hiding these things from the learned and the clever, and revealing them to mere children. Yes, Father, for that is what it pleased you to do’. Fr Paul says the gospel today revels the depth of the heart of Jesus and it reveals the reason for his joy. The disciples had gone on a mission and when they return, they share with Jesus the joy of their experience. The joy of Jesus comes from seeing his friends and listening to what they experienced. Jesus calls them children because they are not doctors or teachers. They are simple people without education, but they understand the things of God better than others. The is also joy because the disciples are seeing things which the prophets and others would love to see but didn’t. Mindful of the joy Christ has in this Gospel, Fr Paul invites us to reflect, ‘Do I experience the joy of Jesus in my life? Do I pray to God like Jesus does in today’s Gospel?
