Fr Paul reads from the Gospel of Matthew (2: 13-18) which tells of the Holy Family’s flight into Egypt to avoid Herod’s efforts to find and do away with the baby Jesus.  Fr Paul reminds us that today’s Feast of the Holy Innocents, is for all the children who were killed by the order of King Herod that we hear about in today’s Gospel.  Herod thought and hoped that by killing every boy born in Bethlehem around the same time as Jesus then he would succeed in killing the new-born king of the Jews.  There was nothing these children did to deserve death and this feast reminds us that in God’s eyes no-one is unimportant; no-one is unnecessary; no-one doesn’t matter. For our reflection today, Fr Paul says, we might reflect on how precious we are in the sight of God, just as the Holy Innocents were.
