Fr Paul reads from Matthew’s Gospel (5: 17-19) where Jesus says to his disciples ‘do not imagine that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets, I have come not to abolish but to complete them’.

Fr Paul explains, the law of the ten commandments were given to Moses and that covenant between God was the basis of Israel’s life. They were the terms under which Israel were to be God’s people. Fr Paul says it is clear from this Gospel that Jesus remains faithful to that law. However, He gives it His own emphasis, often quoting The Bible when doing so. Fr Paul gives us the example of how Jesus puts love of a neighbour on a level with the first commandment, of loving God, and so this gives it a new emphasis on the treatment of others.

For our reflection today, Fr Paul invites us to ask ourselves, ‘how well have I kept God’s law in my life?’.
