Fr Paul reads from the Gospel of Matthew (20: 1-6) in which Jesus tells the story of how the owner of the vineyard takes on workers at various times throughout the day so some work more hours than others. Fr Paul says the parable of the labourers in the vineyard in today’s Gospel seems to be telling us that paying everyone equally regardless of how much work they have done could result in troubles in the workplace and, ultimately, the failure of the business. However, what this parable is teaching us is that God is both just and generous but on God’s terms not ours. Fr Paul says, in closing, that it would be, and is, easy to question why and to get jealous of what other have or are given, just like the workers in the Gospel did, but we are challenged by the Gospel to simply and cheerfully accept God’s generosity and justice.
