The Law of God

Fr Paul reads from the Gospel of Matthew (5: 17-19) about the Law of God which Moses delivered and Jesus fulfilled.

In today’s Gospel, Fr Paul says, we need to understand that the basis of Israel’s life at the time of Jesus is the covenant between God and Moses that was given to Moses on Mount Sinai.

As such, so much of our Christian faith comes from the Law; our belief, our behaviours, and in this Gospel, Jesus is teaching us that he remains faithful to this Law but gives it his own emphasis. He gives a whole new dimension to worship and forgiveness.

For example, putting love of neighbour on a level with the First Commandment ‘Love of God’.  This is a new emphasis. This is a new way that Jesus wants to treat others.

So, Fr Paul says, today, we have this Law given by Moses and we have Jesus coming to fulfil it;  we have Jesus coming to emphasise it, to add more to it, and to lead us forward in our Christian faith.
