Fr Paul reads from the Gospel of Matthew (26: 14-25) in which the disciples make preparations for the Passover and Judas agrees with the chief priests to look for an opportunity to betray Jesus.

Fr Paul says, the Gospel we hear today deals with the first part of the Last Supper, its preparation, and the betrayal.  Jesus knows what is going to happen. It is pre-destined that these events took place as they did. What we are hearing about the culmination of God’s plan.

We also hear of the betrayal and, Fr Paul says, a question that always arises at this time of our church’s year is… Why did Judas betray Jesus?  Was it because of greed and for the 30 pieces of silver? Or was it because he came to believe that Jesus was not the one to save the people? Or that Jesus was not the one to expel the Romans who had taken over their country?

Our list of reasons could go on as to why Judas betrayed Jesus, but it remains a mystery.
